Week 2 Assignments

Hey People,

So after week 1 we are going to step into some more structured design processes, starting with Silhouette and Thumbnails.

 Assignment:

1 Brainstorm some ideas for bounty hunters. Settle on one you like.

2 Draw out 20 Thumbnail Silhouettes of that character.

The goal here is to approach a design from one of it's most basic components, the outline, or Silhouette. This way you are drawing an entire character quickly and efficiently. And it allows you to abstract your thought process and think in terms of shapes and design, rather than details and form. Often adding a bit of white line over the top or as I have in my demo, making the silhouette slightly lighter and adding some quick darker line on top... can help to resolve and areas of confusion in the design. But ultimately you want something that is interesting to look at even when it's pure black. If you search for thumbnail designs on Pinterest or google you will probably be able to find a lot of great examples. This is a staple technique in concept design today.

Next week we will take some of these thumbnails and develop them further.

To create your character idea... there are many ways, but if you get lost, start to break down the idea into manageable smaller ideas and really get into the details of your characters appearance and personality. And more specifically how you can translate personality or history or culture into a visual story.

If your design seems to lack something interesting or you are struggling to come up with an inspiring take on an old idea. try throwing into some random ideas and see if that will mix it up. Try to feel liberated by these processes rather than restricted by them.
